Industry Outlook 2022: Industrial Real Estate
Going Places With…. Stacey Saathoff, Associate
Tell us about your experience in the industry and with Belvoir.
I am new to the CRE industry, and my past experience consists of a diverse sales career. I most recently worked as the director of client relations for an M&A broker and prior to that I was a sales consultant for a home builder. Within those roles I developed interest in commercial opportunities. I joined the Belvoir team in October and feel confident that I could not have made a better choice. Belvoir is a very energetic and motivating environment to work in and, although there is a learning curve when entering a new industry, the culture and team make the challenges easier. There’s a great dynamic here.

What’s the biggest thing you’ve learned in your new role?
Commercial real estate truly is all about helping people. I think that’s my favorite part of our work. At the end of the day, a broker’s purpose is to help people achieve their investment goals. You’re serving clients who have a need to achieve their personal and/or business goals and you’re a vital part of their strategy for success. It is very rewarding to impact someone’s livelihood.

What keeps you busy outside of work?
I enjoy traveling with friends when I can, and I love going to college football games on a Saturday. Most people would agree I have a monogram addiction. I was recently gifted an embroidery machine, so I’ve been having a lot of fun learning how to use that. I’ve always felt like when you can put a person’s name on a gift, it takes something nice and makes it even more personal. Gift giving is my love language!

The Flex Space: What it is and What You Should Know
Going Places With…. Kelsie Walker, Transaction Coordinator
Tell us about your time at Belvoir.
I began here with an internship in May, and at the time I just worked with one broker. I became a full-time employee in August, and the experience has been a lot of fun. I’ve worked with a few brokers now, helped out with marketing and worked with some of the other aspects of our company, too. I’ve enjoyed building those relationships and really learning our industry. My job looks very different every day. It’s a busy place, which works for me. I like being busy.

What’s something you think people should know about your work?
There are a lot of moving parts, so teamwork is really important in what we do. Marketing has to be a part of every listing, the brokers are part of the sales part of it — there’s no aspect of real estate that’s just left to one person. Our team collaborates well, and I think our camaraderie is a big part of the reason Belvoir has been so successful.

What do you do in your free time?
I play and coach volleyball, but I don’t really consider it free time. I’m currently playing my fifth year for the University of St. Thomas. The NCAA gave all student athletes another year of eligibility due to COVID, so I saved my last class for eligibility. Belvoir has been very flexible with my schedule, which I appreciate. In December I’ll officially have my bachelor’s degree and MBA in finance.

Tell us about your career path.
I’ve been a numbers guy since about 2007. Before joining on with Belvoir I was a senior accountant for Houston First Corporation. Although that role wasn’t specifically in commercial real estate, I was responsible for about five tenants, billing their rent and utilities, and calculating maintenance costs. I like this industry because it provides great learning opportunities, and it will always be there. There will always be people who need a place to run their businesses.

What’s something you think people should know about your work?
I view accounting as a very powerful position because every business decision will eventually come down to money. Should we buy this equipment? Can we afford to hire this person? How can we pay for this project? Accounting is at the center of it all. In accounting, you always know what’s going on with your company. It’s very interesting.

What do you do in your spare time?
I like to drive and go on long trips. But since I purchased my house a few years back, I’ve begun gardening. It was a great hobby to have during COVID, and it’s been a wonderful learning experience. I also enjoy cooking, and I’m a very social person. I don’t like to sit still.

The Return of American Manufacturing — and the Role Commercial Real Estate Plays
Going Places With Kirsten Ritch, Executive Administrator
Tell us about your path to Belvoir.
I graduated from Sam Houston State University in 2018 with a degree in business management and actually moved to Hawaii afterward, to manage at Enterprise Rent-A-Car. Getting to experience life in Hawaii was amazing, but in October I decided it was time to come back to Texas. I’d been interested in the real estate lifestyle for a while and found my fit with Belvoir. I’ve been here since mid-January, and it’s been a great experience. The company fulfills a lot of the things I was looking for. It’s not a big corporation, it’s supportive of its team members and allows for a little freedom.

What are your professional goals?
In my current role, I have my hand in just about everything that goes on with the company, and it provides a great chance to learn about the industry and see what’s out there. I could actually see myself going in a couple of directions in real estate. I might consider becoming a broker or even managing a future Belvoir office if the company chooses to open more locations outside of Houston. One of the things I love about Belvoir is that there are a lot of younger people here who have the same vision for the company. There’s a lot of growth that comes with that — both for the company and on an individual level.

What do you do in your spare time?
I very much like to be outdoors. So, whether it’s going out for a walk, sitting in the park or even taking a beach trip — something I don’t get to do too much of here in Houston — I’m happy when I’m outside. I’d say my favorite thing is probably sitting down to relax on a good patio.

Belvoir Out and About - At Belvoir, we think our tenants are pretty sweet. We recently kicked off the summer with an ice cream social at our Galleria-area office building. We appreciate all those who came out to meet our team, including TEXPO Power, Pinnacle Engineering, Belmont Village and Bee Well Pediatrics! We look forward to hosting other great events like this in the future!

The New Normal: Commercial Real Estate Market Trends to Watch
Going Places With Derick Perkins, Business Development Manager
Tell us about your path to Belvoir.
Out of college I worked at an Oklahoma City high school — first as a football coach, and later as athletic director. After that, I worked on the football staff at Texas Tech University. I eventually decided to get back to my Midland, Texas, roots and take on business development work in oil and gas. That’s what I’ve been up to for the past four years, and I enjoyed it. But when I met Matthew Goldsby, I fell in love with Belvoir’s vision of the business. I saw Belvoir as an opportunity to take what I loved about my past roles and find some synergy here. I’ve been here for about a month now. It’s a younger company with a lot of younger people, and everyone brings ideas to the table. This is a great environment. What’s something you think people should know about the industry?
I’ve always enjoyed building relationships with people. I loved it with coaching, and I think it’s part of the reason working in sales was such a good fit for me. In real estate, too, those relationships are important. By offering quality service, you’re building trust and developing relationships that will hopefully turn into repeat business transactions that benefit both the client and the company.

What do you do in your spare time?
Coaching was a big part of my life for a long time, and I still follow a ton of sports. My wife and I are also both relatively athletic and love getting outdoors, whether it be in Colorado on mountain bikes or out on the trails here in Houston.

Belvoir Out and About - Belvoir’s very own Matthew Goldsby and Nick Spearman took third place in Generation One’s Annual Sporting Clays Shoot, which took place during the first weekend in May! Proceeds benefit Generation One, a Houston nonprofit aimed at creating equal opportunity education landscapes and empowering all children to reach their full potential.

How to Remain Relevant When a Building Life Cycle Shrinks
Going Places With Renee Kaiser, Leasing Associate
Tell us about your career path.
I started out as a receptionist at my mom’s architecture firm and became interested in the marketing side of things. I was a marketing major at Texas State and, when I went for a concentration in sales, the sales side really drew me in. For a while I thought that’s the route I’d take, but an internship showed me that it wasn’t really my cup of tea. Later on, I took a marketing role with a construction engineering firm, where I did a lot of RFQs, proposals, events — and anything else in the marketing realm, really. I found myself missing that grind or social aspect of sales. Around then was when I started looking into commercial real estate — and Belvoir.Tell us about your experience with Belvoir.
I found out about Belvoir when I found a listing for an open position on LinkedIn, and I’d actually been considering the industry for a while. It was perfect timing. I joined the team in early February, and it’s been a great experience. The team has been very welcoming, and I’ve been learning the ropes and gaining some traction in my new role.

What is your role with the team?
The buildings Belvoir owns are my babies. I’m showing people spaces, reaching out to prospective clients and doing some of the marketing work that relates to those properties. It’s funny how things work out. My position now provides a great opportunity to put my past marketing and sales experience to use at once. I’m really enjoying it.

Describe your work ethic.
I grew up with a single mom, so I’ve always kind of felt like I have to be able to dig in and make it myself. I’m very driven, and I like to be organized. Everything is planned out — as much as it can be — and on a calendar.

What’s something you’ve learned through your time with the company?
I haven’t been here very long, but the team has given me some great insight. I’ve learned that, if you’re going to be in this industry, you can’t expect everyone else to get you where you need to be. You have to do it yourself. You have to take the action. You’ll have help from others along the way if needed, but you have to reach out.

What do you do in your spare time?
I really enjoy traveling. That’s been a little hampered this past year, but I have managed to get some U.S. trips in. I just love to see new places, experience new cultures and eat foods from different countries. I also enjoy cooking, and being home so much more during COVID has given me a new love of gardening. I am into cork art — making wreaths and things like that. My husband (who’s a big Packers fan) and I also have a dog named Lambeau (Field) and a cat named Aaron Rodgers.
